Our family used to stop in Des Moines just to eat at On The Border. When one opened close to us we had to go. It was super busy when it first opened but it has settled down now. We can usually easily get a table for 5. The food at this location is always plentiful and delicious. I recommend the Ranchero Enchiladas or the Southwest Chicken Tacos. Our kids love the chicken Quesadillas and the bottomless chips and salsa! The location is always clean and the staff is always very friendly. If you're nearby definitely give this On The Border a try!

I have enjoyed coming to On The Border (OTB) very much. OTB has unique entrees you can't find anywhere else. Also the fresh made chips and salsa that are top notch. Happy hour is 1. Mon thru Fri 3:00 - 6:00 pm 2. Sat all day happy hour during football with 9 wide screen tvs. Very friendly staff. Cheers

Went to OTB for happy hour. These deals have changed quite a bit over the years. Food-wise, what use to be quite affordable tapas items have been replaced with 1/2 prices full-sized apps. While the apps are good, it left little room for anything else. The stacked nachos were just ok. The chips were thicker than the standard. And there wasn't great coverage of items. I would suggest opting for the primo queso, which is basically the same thing...just with chips on the side. And it is a could $$ cheaper. The quesadilla was a highlight. It allows you to get your fajita fix with about 1/3 the $20+ price tag getting actual fajitas. The service was great. There was a bit of a wait after being seated, but once our server arrived it was off to the races. I did also see a promotion where happy hour is now all day on Saturdays. Good option for the football season.

Look, it is what it is. It's like a more Mexican-centric Chilis. Don't expect authenticity. Don't except fine dining. We got two margaritas, both were huge and delicious. No complaints. I got the nachos and bf got the quesadilla. If you've ever been to a Chuy's, the nachos are similar but not QUITE as good. I love a nacho plate with each chip constructed as its own bite. No complaints from either of us on the food. Chips and salsa to start off were great too. Can you find better Mexican food elsewhere? Absolutely. Is this place worth a trip? Also yes. If you like Tex mex and are looking for a no-frills, family friendly meal, this is a good choice. We sat in the bar area and the service was super friendly.

Can't complain about this place. I love the location of it as it takes place of where the old pizza ranch was. i love the chips and salsa we're free & the salsa was a little spicy. We devoured queso dip which also had a little kick to it. I got two birria tacos that came with rice and beans. I thought the price was a little high for the amount they gave you - but the tacos were well filled. I probably wouldn't come back too often because it can get pricey, but would recommend trying out if in the area.

We finally made our way to OTB, after all the mixed experiences popped up, and if I'm being honest I thought it was fine for it being tex-mex. We generally share entrees (I refuse to eat leftovers... REFUSE!) so we don't have a whole lot to take home... but dangit if I say our choice was spot on!! We got The Ultimate Fajita that comes with four proteins, grilled veggies, rice and beans. The steak and chicken tasted excellent, the shrimp and braised pork carnitas were BOMB! We also shared their Crispy Honey Chipotle Shrimp Tacos. That spicy avocado ranch will get ya at the end.. fair warning! VERY crunchy, crispy fried shrimp with a sweet and tangy sauce. Also served with rice and beans, which kinda took off the spice edge (I'm such a ween ) it was banging until that... last bite... If you haven't been, you should at least try them once. Very tex-mex-eee, good place to converse while you eat your weight in chips and salsa. I'm sure we'll be back! They do have outdoor seating that I'm sure I'll be perched on come working!
